What the leading scientists say ....
American Psychological Association
"[M]any scientists share the view that sexual orientation is shaped for most people at an early age through complex interactions of biological, psychological and social factors."
The American Psychological Association's pamphlet, "Answers to Your Questions About Sexual Orientation and Homosexuality."
"Gay Brain" Researcher Simon LeVay
"At this point, the most widely held opinion [on causation of homosexuality] is that multiple factors play a role."
LeVay, Simon (1996). Queer Science, MIT Press.
Dennis McFadden, University of Texas neuroscientist
"Any human behavior is going to be the result of complex intermingling of genetics and environment. It would be astonishing if it were not true for homosexuality."
"Scientists Challenge Notion that Homosexuality's a Matter of Choice," The Charlotte Observer, August 9, 1998.
Sociologist Steven Goldberg
"I know of no one in the field who argues that homosexuality can be explained without reference to environmental factors."
Goldberg, Steven (1994). When Wish Replaces Thought: Why So Much of What You Believe is False. Buffalo, New York: Prometheus Books.
The following is a comment from Dean Hamer, whose research in 1993 started the whole thing about the gay gene
"Gay gene" researcher Dean Hamer was asked by Scientific American if homosexuality was rooted solely in biology. He replied:
"Absolutely not. From twin studies, we already know that half or more of the variability in sexual orientation is not inherited. Our studies try to pinpoint the genetic factors...not negate the psychosocial factors."
"New Evidence of a 'Gay Gene'," by Anastasia Toufexis, Time, November 13, 1995, vol. 146, Issue 20, p. 95.
This is the summary from chapter 9. My Genes Made Me Do It! - A Scientific Look at Sexual Orientation.
" We can confidently predict half a dozen linkages will be “discovered” between genes and behavior eachyear. But the important lesson is this: any linkages probably affect only a small proportion of people to a veryminor extent. The scientific community realizes that “our genes do not make us do it”. Hamer has always believedthat. To give him the last word: “There will never be a test that will say for certain whether a child will be gay.We know that for certain.”18 This means as clearly as anyone could state, that no-one is born gay. Proponents of the view that homosexuality has psychological and sociological explanations have no difficulty with the possibility of genetic linkages to homosexuality. Any genetic link to a physical characteristic that might heighten a person’s sense of gender nonconformity (the strongest known predictor of later homosexuality), could be held to be a contributing factor to later homosexuality. In a boy these might be, for example, genes related to slightness of build, lack of physical co-ordination (making a boy poor at sports), sensitivity. In a girl they might be factors like atypical physical strength, height, or weight. Links? Yes, butweak and indirect.
TWIN STUDIES
Jones & Yarhouse (2000) re-calculated the pairwise concordance from the original data in Bailey’s paper. They find for identical twins (male or female) that if one has SSA the chances of the second one or co-twin having SSA are 11% for either gender - only 1 time in 9. Here is how the final (pairwise) concordances look:

In other words, it is the overwhelming norm that if one identical twin has SSA, the other usually doesn’t. Since identical twins have identical genes the conclusion is inescapable – we are mostly not born gay, and genes are not much responsible. This is not just a test for the influence of genes, but a test for the influence of any common factors before birth, common womb environment, for example. The effect shown in the figure includes all common factors before birth. Born gay? No. http://www.mygenes.co.nz/WilsonRahman.htm

There are five references in the Qur'an which have been cited as referring to gay and lesbian behavior. Some obviously deal with effeminate men and "masculine women." The two main references to homosexual behavior are:
"We also sent Lut : He said to his people : "Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation (ever) committed before you? For ye practice your lusts on men in preference to women: ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds." Qur'an 7:80-81
"What! Of all creatures do ye come unto the males, and leave the wives your Lord created for you? Nay, but ye are forward folk." Qur'an 26:165
Both references relate to gay sexual activities; lesbian practices are not mentioned in the Qur'an.
Make what you want to make of this, I am no religious scholar, but it seems pretty clear cut to me. (WINK)
(1) The Prophet (saws) said: (1) "Kill the one who sodomizes and the one who lets if be done to him." (Tirmidhi, a sahih (authentic) hadith)
(2) "May Allah curse him who does that Lot's people did." (Ibn Hibban, sahih (authentic))
(3) "Lesbianism by women is adultery between them." (Tabarani, sahih)"

And in different schools of islam . . .
The Hanafite school (currently seen mainly in South and Eastern Asia) teaches that no physical punishment is warranted.
The Hanabalites, (widely followed in the Arab world) teach that severe punishment is warranted.
The Sha'fi school of thought (also seen in the Arab world AND IN MALDIVES ) requires a minimum of 4 adult male witnesses before a person can be found guilty of a homosexual act.

Homosexuality and Athena
Sorry dudes and dudettes, I am unfortunately not homosexual nor bisexual. But, I do have friends who are if that counts.
I have nothing against or for homosexuals. For me they are just people like you and me. hmm maybe not you. but yeah you know what I mean. I don't see how people can take a moral high ground and point their fingers. Nobody is pure, everybody has their own things. Why worry about Homosexuals when you have your own stuff to deal with? I say let them be, let each us of be. Respect each other. If its not something you want to associate yourself with, them by all means go away, but don't you start chating the evils of homosexuality. They are not harming anyone.
interesting post
ReplyDeleteI agree with u that we should respect each other's sexual orientation. I've noticed that a lot of girls explore their bisexulaity more than guys, coz even here in Maldives with the introduction of porn n other stuff guys and girls alike are lead to think its sexy...
My fist reaction to me being bisexual was a downrigh NEVER! but the more i think abt it it gets easier.. so i definetely think theres more environmental factor in it than biological- oh well back to the nature vs nuture debate
I have been told that our sexual instincts come from the animal instincts in us. I wonder how it is among other animals. I mean do we find homosexuality among cats, dogs, cows, etc.
ReplyDeleteIf there is it cannot be environmental factors or can it? hmmm. Just adding a thought to the gene vs environment debate.
You are right about not being judgmental about people's sexual orientation. There are other things to worry about.
Having said that, I wonder Golhaabo is really gay as they say? (Sorry, just a pathetic attempt at a lame joke) hehe
transitions
ReplyDeleteI can't say that I never thought about exploring bisexuality. But it never went byound thinking about it. From that I assumed that I didn't have what it took to be bisexual, hehehe unlucky me. True it is more environmental. I certainly did have more opportunities here in NZ than in MV!
maldivian devil
Our sexual instincts do come from our animal instinct. And there is a lot of same sex going on in animals, but sorry its not genetic, only environment. Since these instances only occur where there is a lack of a female partner or when the male is too low on the pecking order of the herd to attain a female. I read it somewhere that only humans CHOOSE to be homosexual while opposite sex partners are readily available. so there you go.
NO Golhabo is not GAY, otherwise he would not have been caught sucking boobies in the backseat of a car with F.Riza. But I hear that his bro is really gay! So much for the genetics theory
ooops! Totally forgot the Coastu Kiru story. You are absolutely right. Golhaa is not gay. He is at the most bi.
ReplyDeleteThere's no such thing as Gay gene or lesbian gene. They just try to find some justification for that act they indulge in which is prohibited by God!!
ReplyDeletedancing in the rain - for someone who is touched by the sick, you kinda come off and sounding a bit judgemental. I know that homosexuality is not a disease, and definitely not genetic, but c'mon cut them some slack!
ReplyDeletemaldivian devil - He is not Bi, either sorry to disappoint you, he is straight as an arrown when he comes to his sexuality, pity it doesn't reflect in his politics, don't you think ?
We do what we do for our reasons, and sometimes things cannot be reasoned out.
ReplyDeleteI dont think we have the right to condone a particular person or an act, when we dont knw what it was like to be that person.. only if you were that person and u went thru it all, can u act all superior and claim that u would have done it differently ( after proving yourself only )
So I always say live and let live... the most sensible phrase ever if you ask me :)
I think you're all not getting the point here. "Live and let live" is all nice, warm and fuzzy but the truth is we have to get involved and be concerned for homosexuals because of the fact that societies in almost every country discriminate and, what the heck, just plain harrass them in every aspect of life. A lot of us are afraid of being associated with homosexuals or defending their political status (I'm sorry love but I detect a hint of it in your post Athena - you didn't really need to state your sexual orientation so strongly).
ReplyDeleteA lot of crazy-ass people like Dancing In The Rain like to talk about choice. Well then answer me if you're so straight. If its such a matter of choice do you really think that you could wake up one day wanting to fuck a guy's bunghole just because all the cool kids are doing it? Seriously you people confuse me.
And one more thing. Lipstick lesbians who cater to male sexual fantasies piss the heck out of real lesbians. Some people are trying to get some respect for their lifestyle and these confused little girls go around turning it into some burlesque show.
ReplyDelete"Definitely not genetic" seems too strong a position to take as well Athena especially with the quotes from respected scientists you've included. While research is all well and good, in the meantime let's actually start doing something to make sure that homosexuality is not just a big joke for dinner conversations.
Hamza 'live and let live' is meant for all those people who pass out unnecesary judgments and take a moral high ground' if they did let it go, homosexual people would not have a problem would they?
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with you that we should be involved the gay issue. Sorry as I came off as whatever I came off as, BUT I am not afraid or even embarassed to be seen with homosexual people nor of their association. I actually do a lot of my shopping with my gay buddy, and do (ehem) my 'boy checking out' with him too.
I was also quite involved with the gay rights group at the university. So you can't say I shy away from the issue.
I stated my sexual preference only because I was sad I could not feel what they felt, if you must know, kinda disappointed that I could not atleast be 'BI'
AS for the genetics issue, I did read a lot of it in my studies and also in just out of interest. they still haven't found any and they say that it is very unlikely. Maybe I am putting too much on scientific fact. But I didn't want my gay friends to put all their weight on the gene thing. Instead, they are happier with accepting who they are just based on their self rather than a 'genetic disposition'.
I am all for 'lets start something..' What do you have in mind? Count me in
shanu
ReplyDeleteagree with you their mate,
where was is that I heard that, who have no sin against them cast the first stone? or something along the line
The bible I think :P? Anyways I'm sorry for misjudging you. Big mistake that I've actually called some people up on for doing. I've always seen myself as someone with a whole lot of gay and lesbian friends and kinda thought I was an anomaly. My apologies and much respect for your open-mindedness and social consciousness.
ReplyDeletehamza dude, its all kewl man. a mistake anybody could have made, you did not have to apologise, but thanx.
ReplyDeleteits nice to see more socially conscious and aware people nowadays. But open minded people are still rare to come by, glad I met you
Thanks dudette. That's the classiest apology acceptance speech I've seen. LOLZ. It's great meeting someone with strong informed opinions such as yourself too. Mad props. :D
ReplyDeleteI have always been in awe how homosexuals still get married, have kids and goes on practicing their homosexuality with such ease.. there was a time we could use the word "gay" without associating it wit homosexuality..
ReplyDeleteI wish i could have seen this post sooner in order to relay my msg personally, but...ehh. since i have ready all the comments i feel entitled to leave one of my own.
ReplyDeleteMatt 7:1
judge not or u shall be judged..(generally)...but same idea of ur beloved "live and let live"(idea).
horrible miss use of context due to religous believers alowing such things as laws to judge actions of others full aware of personal religous text. example (extreme): i shoot someone "BANG" the cop walks up "that was illegal! ur going to jail" "do not judge me lest u be judged." hahahahaha
Ok, now
homosexuality is biologically unnatural; not just unnatural to heterosexuals, but unnatural to anyone, speak to a doctor about anal reconstruction or "not enough lube" syndrome...i think that came off alittle strongly but, ehh.
i am not a religous fanatic more a person that is seeking truth and has found none, if any is to be found.
confusing situations us humans have to deal with.
putting transexual bathrooms so that everyone is comfortable...lol. the gay guy might get sued for going into the wrong bathroom. the business or establishment gets sued for not having a bathroom for the "correct gender"?-uh so......
the fact that some homosexuals can be healed is probably proof that it is just a behavioral problem. furthermore considering evolution i dont see anyhow it could help in the preservation of genes, if there was a genetic code for it, it would have been easily eliminated by evolution. or maybe homosexuality is evolutions way of eradicating unwanted genes by preventing them from breeding.
ReplyDeleteHomosexuality is a parisidic mental disese that for all genetic purposes is suicide. you go againt nature and the will to live. they are less human than child molestaters. (at least the one who go for oppisite sex) The plague humanity trying to force us to accept them. "the only good gay is a dead gay, and even then they are a blight upon our earth as long as thier memory endure`s"
ReplyDeleteGenes or not, this does not really apply. I'm just gay, and I never chose to be, it's been natural for me for as long as I can remember, falling in love with males from early childhood. It's not just about sex, and it's not about being effeminate. I'm very masculine and I was brought up to think that it should be natural to find female partners. So it's not really easy to see how it could be environmental, at least not the way people think about environmental reason. It's not lack of testosterone either, my level has always been above average. So my gayness is really hard to explain, and I don't think it should have to be justified either. Religious people come up with lots of theories that are supposed to found their their intolerance and they belief that gay people are knowingly straying away from the will of God.
ReplyDeleteI was wondering if you ever thought of changing the structure
ReplyDeleteof your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better.
Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or two pictures.
Maybe you could space it out better?
